Nancy is a Meurthe River (Moselle River) cruise port and city in France's Meurthe-et-Moselledepartment. nancy was Upper Lorraine's capital (Duchy of Lorraine/959-1766) during the Holy Roman Empire (800-1806). The city has population around 105,000 (metro over 0,5 million) ranking it Lorraine region's largest and France's 16th-largest. The 313 km (194 mi) long Marne-Rhine Canal was opened in 1853 and connects Paris City with Alsace and Lorraine, and through Rhine River with Germany (Kehl-Strasbourg). Via high-speed trains, Nancy is directly connected with Paris, also to Metz (Moselle), Lyon (Auvergne-Rhone-Alpes), Strasbourg (Alsace-Champagne-Ardenne-Lorraine). Highway A31 connects to Metz, Luxembourg City and Langres (Haute-Marne).

In the Old Town (Vieille Ville-Leopold quarter) are Porte de la Craffe (14th century), the Ducal Palace (15th century), the triumphal arch Porte Desilles (late-18th cntury) and Basilique Saint-Epvre de Nancy (late-19th century). The Charles III-Centre Ville quarter is the new town (built in the 16th-18th centuries) where are the Place Stanislas, Nancy Cathedral (18th century), Opera national de Lorraine (early-20th century, national opera since 2006) and Gare de Nancy-Ville (the city's main railway station). Other popular tourist attractions include two large botanical gardens (Jardin botanique du Montet, Jardin Dominique Alexandre Godron), Museum Aquarium de Nancy, Musee des Beaux-Arts de Nancy (fine arts), Lorraine History Museum, Iron History Museum.
