Narsaq (Narssaq) is a port town in Greenland's Kujalleq municipality, with population around 1,500. Port narsaq (locode GLJNS) features a natural harbor with a steep depth, allowing it to handle larger-sized ships (passenger and cargo). The facility is managed by Royal Arctic Line (Nuuk-based). Pilotage for visiting ships is recommended and available upon request.
Remains of Norse settlement were found in the area, along with church ruins. Dated to 1000 AD, these are among the oldest Norse ruins and artefacts found in Greenland. Tourism supports a large percentage of town's workforce. Most popular tourist activities include fishing, hiking, collecting minerals, boat tours to the ice cap.
The local economy is heavily based on commercial fishing (salmon) and sheep farmin. Of Greenland's all 53 sheep farms, 31 are in this area. Also here are Neqi (country's only slaughterhouse) and Greenland Brewhouse (2005-founded, Greenland's first brewery). The town has a hospital (with a dental clinic), primary school, 2 supermarkets, police station, fire station, church, cafe restaurant, small shops.
Narsaq is a ferry port for the Arctic Umiaq Line (freight and passenger shipping company). Arctic Umiaq serves the south-western Greenland route roundtrip from Nuuk.
