New Bedford MA is a port city in Massachusetts USA, with population around 95,000, ranking it the state's 6th-largest. In the 19th century, the town was nicknamed "The Whaling City" being one of the world's largest whaling ports, together with Nantucket MA and New London CT. The Providence-Fall River-New Bedford metro area has USA's largest Portuguese-American community.

Port New Bedford MA serves mainly as cargo port serving break-bulk carriers and ships transporting perishable food (fruits, fish). Several private and one public boat marinas provide temporary berthing for yachts and leisure boats. Since 2005, the seaport is ranked USA's top fishing port in terms of dollar value.

 

Private ferries serve the city. Seastreak offers fast catamaran ferry service to Martha's Vineyard Island. Cuttyhunk Ferry Company provides scheduled ferry services to Cuttyhunk island.
