Nome is a cruise port in northwest Alaska, located on Seward Peninsula's southern end and facing Bering Sea. Nome AK is a transport, tourist and commercial hub of an Alaskan gold mining region.
Nome has a deep-water seaport used by cargo vessels and cruise ships. The port is located on the southern side of Seward Peninsula (in Norton Sound). Nome Harbor Improvements (port development project) was completed in summer 2006. Works were done by the US Corps of Engineers. Then was added a 922 m (3025 ft) long breakwater east of the existing Causeway, plus a 82 m (270 ft) long spur on the Causeway's end (to a total of 909 m / 2982 ft). City Dock (on the Causeway) has marine headers to handle fuel deliveries and bulk cargo.
The town was established during the gold rush of prospectors to Alaska following the discovery of gold in 1898 at Anvil Creek. Until 1900, the settlement was named Anvil City. In 1900 it was renamed after nearby Cape Nome and had around 20,000 inhabitants. The population drastically decreased in the following years. Gold mining in the area was revived in the late 1970s.
The town hosts the annual Iditarod Dogsled Race (sled dog race). The town is also famous for its Wyatt Earp's Saloon and the 9-pound (4 kg) gold nugget, Nome's Inuit inhabitants produce various handicrafts.
Charter flights (by the American airline Bering Air) connect Nome AK to Provideniya Russia.
