Norfolk Island is located between mainland Australia, New Zealand and New Caledonia, approx 1400 km (870 ml) east of Evans Head (mainland AU). The island is one of Australia's external territories (capital Kingston) together with the two neighbouring uninhabited islands - Nepean and Philip. Norfolk Island has total area approx 35 km2 (13 ml2) and population around 2,000.
Kingston Town is one of Australia's oldest (founded in 1788 as Sydney Bay), Other settlements on Norfolk Island are Burnt Pine (3 km / 2 ml northwest) and Middlegate (2 km / 1 ml north). From Kingston are also visible (to the south) the islands Nepean and Philip.
Among island's best-known tourist attractions are Kingston Pier, HMS Sirius wreckage site (exposed at low tide), Marine Barracks (ruins), Guardhouse, Crankmill (ruins), Prisoner's Barracks, Old Military Barracks, All Saints Church, New Gaol and Salt House (ruins), bays (Cemetery, Emily, Slaughter). Kingston and Arthurs Vale Historic Area are World Heritage Site as one of Australia's Convict Sites. The site has buildings from British Empire's convict era (1788-1855).
