Norman Island is located at the southern tip of British Virgin Islands (BVI) archipelago. The island was named after a pirate who purchased (or leased) it in the early 18th century. Norman Island is privately owned, uninhabited, with land area 600 acres (243 hectares) and length 4 km (2,5 mi). Its large harbour ("The Bight") is one of BVI's most protected anchorage ports.
Norman is one of the "Little Sisters" islands - together with Dead Chest, Ginger, Pelican, Peter island and Salt Island. This group is lower and smaller-sized compared to other BVI isles to the north and west. Norman Island is a popular destination for tourists and cruisers because of 3 water-level caves found at the base of cliffs outside Bight's western edge. The caves are great for snorkeling and night diving-like experiences (if you go deep enough into the cliffs).
The island has no permanent inhabitants, but there is bar, 2 restaurants and full service dive shop - all in The Bight. An old schooner boat operates as a bar-restaurant. Boat moorings in The Bight are offered overnight for USD 30. Norman Island has many hidden bays, caves and wrecks that visitors still explore hoping to discover the pirate treasure.
