Novi Sad is a Danube River cruise port and Serbia's 2nd largest city (after Belgrade) with population around 280,000 (metro around 350,000).
The town was established in 1694, when Serbian merchants set up a colony across the river from Petrovaradin fortress (Habsburg Empire's military post). During the 18th-19th centuries, the town became major manufacturing and trading centre, nicknamed "Serbian Athens". It was heavily damaged during the 1848 Revolution. Nowadays, it is a amjor industrial and financial center of Serbia.
Among the city's tourist attractions are art galleries and museums, the most famous being Vojvodina (established 1847) housing permanent collection of Serbian culture and life. Novi Sad Museum is in Petrovaradin Fortress and displays permanent collection of fort's history. Other popular places are Matica Srpska Gallery (city's largest) and Fine Arts Gallery (with one of Serbia's largest art collections of 20th century items).
