Oban is a port and resort town in Argyll and Bute (northern / Highlands Scotland UK). By population (around 9,000) it is the largest town between Helensburgh and Fort William. During summer (tourist season), the population increases up to 25,000. The town is in Lorne (Firth of Lorn, fjord-like estuary), on a horseshoe-shaped bay protected by Kerrera Island and further by Isle of Mull. To the north is Lismore Island and the mountains Morvern and Ardgour.
Tucked into a bay at Argyll Peninsula's top (Scotland's central-west coast), Oban Harbour is major ferry port connecting mainland Scotland with the islands via CalMac Ferries-provided regularly scheduled crossings. Upon approaching the port, tourists see McCaig's Tower (replica of the Colosseum in Rome Italy) which was built by a local banker in 1900.
Best-known tourist attractions around Oban are the dramatic coastal scenery, castles, ancient religious sites. The ruins of Dunadd Castle can be seen in mist-shrouded Kilmartin Glen, one of the most beautiful sea lakes in Scotland, where a weathered rock marks the site where Scottish kings were crowned until 11th century. Nearby, stone circles witness to a civilization that dates back 5000 years. Loch Fyne is where the Duke of Argyll makes his home at Inverary Castle.
After Oban UK is named Oban NZ (Stewart Island, New Zealand).
In January 2020, the port operator company CMAL (Caledonian Maritime Assets Ltd) conducted planned maintenance works for replacing the lifting cylinders of the port's both linkspans (1 and 2). Each linkspan was closed for 10 days.
