Oldenburg is a Hunte River/Weser River cruise port and city in Germany's Lower Saxony state (Urban district). By population (around 170,000) the city is ranked state's 3rd largest - after Hannover and Braunschweig. The city is on two rivers - Haaren and Hunte (western tributary of Weser River) and also on Kustenkanal (Coastal Canal) - 70-km / 43-mi long inland waterway linking Hunte River with Dortmund-Ems Canal (Ems River) near Papenburg. Oldenburg is approx 50 km (30 mi) from Bremen, approx 160 km (100 mi) from Hamburg and approx 170 km (106 mi) from Hannover (Niedersachsen/Lower Saxony state's capital).

The settlement was founded in the 8th-century. It was first mentioned as town (Aldenburg) in 1108 and became the capital of the Grand Duchy of Oldenburg (1091-1774). In the mid-17th-century, the wealthy town was devastated first by a major plague epidemic (in 1667) then was destroyed by a fire. Most of its traditional architecture is from late-18th-century when its was rebuilt in a klassizistisch/classicist style. After WW2 91939-1945) State of Oldenburg (Freistaat Oldenburg) became part of the British occupation zone.

As cruise port, Oldenburg is included in the schedules of some of Europe's largest river cruise companies - CroisiEurope (ships Victor Hugo and Mona Lisa) and Nicko Cruises (ship Frederic Chopin). Next tables show some of the Oldenburg-visiting cruisetour itineraries as ports sequences and prices per person (double occupancy rates).
