Ornskoldsvik is a Baltic port city in Sweden's Vasternorrland County, with population around 30,000. Port Ornskoldsvik (locode SEOER) is on Bothnia Gulf and features a large natural harbor where are handled mainly bulk cargo ships (carrying lumber and other cargoes). The city's economy is largely based on the forestry and paper industry (logging, pulp mills, paper products export/the company Holmen AB) and heavy machinery production (the company BAE Systems Hagglunds AB).

As cruise port, Ornskoldsvik is visited by smaller-sized ships and superyachts/tall-sailships, with most itineraries leaving roundtrip from Germany (Kiel, Hamburg, Bremerhaven). The city is interlinked via European route E4 (between Tornio Finland and Helsingborg Sweden) passing through Sweden from north to south. Ornskoldsvik Airport (in Husum, approx 25 km / 15 mi northeast of the city) handles regularly scheduled daily flights (by Sveaflyg) connecting to Sweden's capital city Stockholm (Arlanda Airport).

Sweden's fastest railway Bothnia Line passes through Ornskoldsvik. The trains travel with max speed 250 kph (160 mph) and cross 140 bridges and 25 km (16 km) of tunnels. The railroad's termini are Hoga Kusten Airport (north) and Umea (south). Prior to 1995, direct ferries interlinked Ornskoldsvik and Vaasa Finland.

Domestic tourism is also well-developed in Ornskoldsvik, with signature recreational and sports activities being hiking, skiing, camping, golfing (Veckefjardens GC/Golf Club), boating (to the nearby islands). The Paradisbadet aquapark is an indoor facility having one of Europe's longest water slides.
