Peine is a Fuhse River/Aller River/Weser River cruise port and town in Germany's Lower Saxony state (Peine district) with population around 50,000. Hafen Peine (port) is also on the Mittellandkanal (Midland Canal, length 326 km / 202 mi) that links Germany with France, Switzerland, Belgium, Netherlands, Luxembourg, Poland, Czech Republic and (via the Danube) with Baltic Sea. Peine is approx 25 km (16 mi) west of Braunschweig (on Oker River, linking to the North Sea) and approx 40 km (25 mi) east of Hannover (on Leine River).
Some river cruise ships may alternatively dock at Wendeburg - approx 11 km (7 mi) to the east from Peine.
Port Peine (Hafen Peine) consists of two separately operated ports with facilities (warehouses, silos) adapted to the location's respective purposes. The vessels served by Hafen Peine include mainly cargo barges carrying scrap metal, steel, coal, fertilizers, agricultural products (grain, feed). Both ports are interlinked via a double-track railway. Regularly scheduled public buses connect the port with the town and are also used by cruise ship tourists.
