Pico Island (officially Ilha do Pico), is one of the Portuguese Azores Islands. It covers a total area of approx 447 km2 (173 mi2) and has population around 16,000. the island's main port towns are Madalena (capital), Lajes do Pico, and Sao Roque do Pico (main port). The island is approx 18 km (11 mi) south of Sao Jorge Island and 7 km (4 mi) east of Faial Island.

Pico Island has length 46 km (29 ml) and max-width 16 km (10 ml). The landscape features the Ponta do Pico volcano (Portugal's highest mountain) and historical vineyards. Until 1980s, local economy was based on whaling. Current industries include shipbuilding, wine production and tourism. Since 2004, Pico Island Vineyard Culture is designated a UNESCO site.

The port town Sao Roque do Pico is on the island's northern part and has population around 4,000. By the 19th century, a disease infected and devastated the island's wine-making culture. To compensate, the island started developing the whaling industry, resulting in the establishment of 5 whale processing factories along the north coast that supported the production of oils, perfumes and fertilizers. This business continued until 1980s. The building is now a museum exhibiting artifacts for the whaling era.
