Pont-Sainte-Maxence is in France's Oise department (Hauts-de-France region) and on the Oise River's left bank. The downtown extends on both sides of the river. Most shops and services are grouped on two main streets - Henri Bodchon, and Charles Lescot. Via TER Hauts-de-France trains (operating the Creil-Jeumont railway), the town is directly connected to Creil (12 km), Compiegne (22 km), and the capital Paris (62 km, Gare du Nord).
Approx 20 km (13 mi) to the south from Pont-Sainte-Maxence is Chantilly - visited (via mountain road D120 and highway D1016) as a cruise shore excursion/bus tour destination. The town of Chantilly (population around 10,000) is popular for the Chateau de Chantilly (14th-19th-century built castle/1358-1882) comprised of two attached buildings - Petit Chateau and Grand Chateau.
Oise River originates in Belgium (Hainaut Province), it has length approx 340 km (212 mi) and crosses the Belgium-France border after ~20 km (12 mi). Oise River flows into the Seine at Paris City's suburb Conflans-Sainte-Honorine.
