Port Arthur is a port town in southeastern Tasmania (Australia), located approx 60 km (37 ml) southeast of Hobart (state's capital city). As one of Australia's most important historical areas (Convict and World Heritage site), the entire town is considered an open-air museum.

Port Arthur is Tasmania's top-ranked tourism travel destination, and has population under 500. The town is one of Australia's all 11 penal sites constructed in 18th-19th centuries during the British Empire (16th-20th century). These include Kingston and Arthur's Vale (Norfolk Island), Old Government House (NSW), Hyde Park Barracks (NSW), Brickendon-Woolmers (Tasmania), Darlington (Tasmania), Old Great North Road (NSW), Cascades (Tasmania), Port Arthur (Tasmania), Coal Mines (Tasmania), Cockatoo Island (NSW) and Fremantle Prison (Western Australia).

In 1979 funding was obtained to preserve Port Arthur as tourist destination with great historical significance. The community's municipal offices and the post office were moved to Nubeena. Several sandstone structures (created by convicts under hard labor conditions) were cleaned and restored. Buildings (Guard Tower, Church, "Model Prison", main penitentiary's remnants) are surrounded by green parkland.
