Port Douglas is a port town in Queensland Australia, located approx 70 km (40 ml) north of Cairns, with population around 3,000. However, its population often double with the influx of tourists during peak season (May through September). The town developed very fast based on QLD's mining industry.
The town is adjacent to Daintree Rainforest and Great Barrier Reef. Every year it attracts domestic and international tourists during two festival periods. Port Douglas Carnivale (in the end of May) runs for 10 days over 2 weekends beginning with Macrossan Street Parade. It attracts over 10,000 people. The Sunset in the Park Music Festival and Porttoberfest North Queensland's Beer Festival are in October-November. During November's first weekend is hosted the Canegrowers Great Barrier Reef Marathon Festival.
Located close to Great Barrier Reef, from Port Douglas many cruisetour companies operate daily trips to the outer reef and Low Isles for snorkelling and scuba diving. Port Douglas is also popular for its many restaurants, premium resorts and golf courses.
