Port Stanley is the capital of Falkland Islands, located on East Falkland island, on a north-facing slope. The town has population around 2,000, while the island's entire population is around 3,000. Stanley is represented by 5 members of the Falklands' Legislative Assembly.
Port Stanley is currently the Falklands' main shopping center, as well as East Falkland's road network hub. Attractions include Falkland Islands Museum, Government House (1845; home to the Governor of Falkland Islands), a golf course, whalebone arch, totem pole, war memorials and shipwrecks in the harbour. The Falkland Islands Company owns a hotel and several shops. Stanley has 11 hotels and guesthouses, 4 pubs, 3 restaurants, main tourist office, fish and chip shop. There are 3 churches, including Anglican Christ Church Cathedral, which is the world's southernmost Anglican cathedral, and the Roman Catholic Saint Mary's Church. A bomb disposal unit in the city is a legacy of the Falklands War.
In Port Stanley is homeported the UK's new icebreaker shipRRS Sir David Attenborough (2021-built). The ship operates on round-trips to Antarctica, serving the British Antarctica scientific stations. Until 2019, here were homeported the British Antarctica based ships RRS Ernest Shackleton and RRS James Clark Ross/now Noosfera.
