Portimao is a port town in Faro (Algarve region, southern Portugal) with population around 55,000. Before 1924 named "Vila Nova de Portimao", the town is located on Arade River's right bank. Historically a shipbuilding and fishing port, Portimao (locode PTPRM) has developed into a tourist destination popular for its beaches. Algarve's most populous towns are Portimao and Faro.

In July 2022, the Portuguese Environment Agency (APA-Agencia Portuguesa do Ambiente) gave a green light to a  new dredging project for deepening and widening Portimao's navigation channel (on Arade River) to allow access to bigger-sized cruise ships - with max LOA length 272 m (892 ft) in comparison to the current max LOA 210 m (689 ft). The project's budget (~EUR 27 million) includes ~EUR 12M for dredging works, ~EUR 12M for decarbonization and environmental requalification, and ~EUR 3M for underwater archaeological research.

The town's economy is largely maritime-oriented and seafaring-based. It allowed the development of industries like commercial fishing, fish processing (canning, conservation, salination), shipbuilding and marine transport. The Arade basin permitted commerce associated with the cultivation of figs, almonds, carob, and saw-milling/forestry industry, among others.

Being situated on Portugal's southern coast, Portimao is well known in the sailing world as an ideal location for sailing on the Atlantic, boasting much calmer weather conditions and seas than the Western coastline.

Portimao is the host venue for a lot of prestigious sailing events, such as the annual Portugal Match Cup (part of the World Match Racing Tour). This special event draws the world's best sailboat teams. The identical supplied boats (SM-40) are raced two at a time. Points count towards the World Match Race Tour as well as a place in the season's final race. The overall winner takes the title ISAF World Match Racing Tour Champion. An ideal sport for spectators in Portimao is match racing.
