Portoferraio is a port and main city on Elba island (France). The port is located just 5,5 ml (9 km) from mainland Italy. The island is part of the Livorno province and has population around 12,000..

Portoferraio remains influenced by Tuscany. Tourists come back again for its great natural beauty, fine local food and wine. Wind carved headlands and pine scented forests shelter hidden coves. Portoferraio's sandy beaches invite cruisers to wade into clear blue waters. Travelers may enjoy a local vineyard tour, or near the city, discover the remains of Etruscan civilisation.

Called Aethalia by the Greeks and Ilva by the Ligurians, Portoferraio passed from Etruscans and became part of the strong Roman Empire. During the Middle Ages it was ruled by the Pisans and served as haven for the Barbary pirates during the 16th century. The Medici influence is seen in the fortifications of Portoferraio. Napoleon Bonaparte lived here for less than a year, but did much to improve the island, modernizing agriculture, building new roads, and developing iron mines. Villa di San Martino, his summer home, can be visited.

The Portoferraio lighthouse is placed on Forte Stella's northern rampart. It was built in 1788 by Leopod II Grand Duke of Tuscany. The stone tower is 25 m high and has a lantern and double balcony. The lighthouse is automated, operated by Marina Militare.
