Potsdam is a Havel River cruise port, capital and largest city of Germany's Brandenburg state, with population around 170,000. Potsdam directly borders Berlin (approx 24 km / 15 mi southwest of downtown Berlin). The city is also part of the Berlin-Brandenburg metropolis with combined population over 6 million.
Potsdam was a residence of all German Kaisers and Prussian kings until the end of WW1 (1914-1918). The city's landscape features interconnected lakes, grand palaces and numerous nature parks. Potsdam Conference was held here in July-August 1945 (after WW2) with main participants Joseph Stalin (USSR-Russia), Winston Churchill (UK) and Harry Truman (USA).
Before the second world war, Babelsberg (in south-eastern Potsdam) was a prime film production studio and one of Europe's major film production centers since the fall of Berlin Wall (1991). Filmstudio Babelsberg is the world's oldest large-scale film studio. In the 19th-century, the city also developed as a center of science, having 3 public colleges, University and over 30 research institutes.
In 2019, as cruise port, Potsdam was included in the regular schedules of CroisiEurope (ships Mona Lisa, Elbe Princesse 2), Phoenix Reisen (ships Saxonia) and Nicko Cruises (ship Katharina von Bora).
