It is famous worldwide for the Pilsner beer - pale lager created in 1842 by the Bavarian brewer Josef Groll (1813-1887).

  • The most prominent city sights are the St Bartholomew's Cathedral (late 13th century, its tower is the country's highest - at 102 m / 335 ft), the Town Hall, the Moorish Revival Great Synagogue (Europea's 2nd largest - after Dohany Street Synagogue in Budapest).
