Puerto Morelos is a port town on the Yucatán Peninsula, located in Mexico's Quintana Roo state, approx 36 km (22 mi) south of Cancun and approx 30 km (19 mi) north Playa del Carmen. The town has a population of around 10,000.
As the state's oldest, largest, and most important seaport, Puerto Morelos has a dedicated cargo terminal with a capacity to handle large-sized box ships.
In December 2015, Puerto Morelos merged with the neighbouring village Leona Vicario and became Quintana Roo's 11th municipality. Highway 307 and a mangrove swamp divide the town into three sections - Colonia Joaquin Zetina Gazca (west of the highway), Colonia Pescadores (east of the highway) and Antiguo Puerto Morelos (the coastal area east of the swamp). The local economy is based on seaport services, commercial fishing, and tourism (hotels, condos, restaurants, souvenir shops).
As cruise port, Puerto Morelos was first included in Ponant Cruises 2019-2020 itinerary program on the newbuild superyacht Le Champlain (launched 2018). During the winter season (November 2019 through February 2020), the cruise ship had scheduled 14x 7-day roundtrip voyages.
- The 7-day "Maya Treasure of the Yucatán" cruise itinerary visited Mexican ports only - Puerto Dos Bocas, Progreso (overnight), and Puerto Morelos (overnight).
- The 7-day "Natural and Cultural Wonders of Western Caribbean" cruise itinerary included sea day, then visited Honduras (Puerto Cortes), Guatemala (Puerto Barrios, Livingston), Belize City and Bahamas (Half Moon Cay, private island).
