Pulau Ternate Island is one of Maluku Islands (Moluccas) in eastern Indonesia.  The port city Ternate covers a total area of approx 111 km2 (43 mi2) and has population around 190,000.

Ternate Island is located off the west coast of Halmahera Island. Like its neighboring Tidore Island, Ternate is cone-shaped. Both isles are former Islamic sultanates - once the world's major producer of cloves - a commodity that made their sultans the wealthiest in Indonesia.

Currently, Ternate City is the biggest in North Maluku Province. Pulau Ternate's highest elevation point is Mt Gamalama (1715 m / 5626 ft). An eruption in 1840 destroyed most houses. Other eruptions occurred in 1980, 1983, 1994, 2011. During the 2011 eruption, for a few days was closed the domestic airport as ash emissions reached 2000 m (6600 ft) into the atmosphere.

Ternate metro city (Kota Ternate) stretches 10 km (6 mi) from the airport to port Bastiong. The commercial center spreads 2 km from the bus terminal (close to Fort Oranye) to Ahmad Yani Port. It is the largest town in North Maluku province.

Sultan's Palace (constructed in 1796) partly serves as a museum. Fort Oranje (1607-built) was home of Dutch East Indies Company until 1619 when it was moved to Batavia (Jakarta).
