Pulau Weh Island (aka Sabang) is an active volcanic island in Andaman Sea. It is located to the northwest of Sumatra (mainland Indonesia), approx 45 min by fast ship (2 hours via ferries from mainland / Banda Aceh).
Sabang is also the island's largest city. Weh is famous for its ecosystem. The Indonesian government declared 60 km2 (23 mi2) of land and sea around Pulau Weh as a protected area.
Scientists discovered a rare megamouth shark species on shore. The island is the world's only habitat for the threatened toad Duttaphrynus valhallae. Coral reefs around the island are popular for scuba diving and snorkeling. The island is best known for its beauty of nature, the sea, beaches, green mountains, the richness of culture and history, its friendly people.
Pulau Weh is small and some beaches are visited on day-trips only via rental vehicles, as there is no public transport here. Anoi Itam is a black sand beach, approx 30-min drive from Port Balohan (Sabang). Anoi Itam Resort is also popular among tourists for its beautiful scenery. Gapang Beach is approx 27 km (17 mi) from Sabang City and offers modest accommodations, food stalls and dive resorts. Iboih Beach (5 km / 3 mi from Gapang) is the largest on Weh Island, cheaper than Gapang Beach, and has view to Rubiah Island (directly offshore).
