Punta del Este is a port city and renowned resort in Maldonado Department (southeastern Uruguay) with population around 10,000 (metro around 220,000 / over 0,6 million during peak summer season). The city covers an area of 20 km2 (8 ml2) and receives over 1 million tourists annually.
Town's scenic coastline is divided in two regions - Mansa and Brava, marking the end of Rio de la Plata (River Plate) and the Atlantic Ocean. Mansa's beaches have golden sand, while Brava's sand is white. Every beach provides public access.
La Barra is famous for fishing and water sports during the day. At late hours, it becomes central attraction for younger generations. From the end of December through the 2nd week of January, the location hosts nightlife festivities popular among both locals and tourists. Other tourist areas include the beaches Bikini, Manantiales and Montoya, as well as El Tesoro Resort. These are favourite spots for young people as well as for many celebrities from Argentina and Uruguay.
The city features colonial architecture (contrasting with modern buildings), gardens, scenic shore, resort houses, department stores, restaurants, pubs, seaport (with moorings for boats and large yachts and anchorage for cruise ships). Punta del Este is home to South America's only Conrad/Hilton Hotel (upscale resort famous for its casino). City's main avenue (Gorlero) has restaurants, cinemas, art galleries, casinos, shops, handicraft market (at Artigas square).
