Quiberon is a port town in France's Brittany region (Morbihan department), with population around 5,000. The town is in Quiberon Peninsula's southern part, while in the northern part is Saint-Pierre-Quiberon. A tombolo (sandy isthmus/narrow piece of land) connects to the mainland.
As cruise port, Quiberon (Port-Haliguen) is visited exclusively by superyachts and smaller-sized ships from ultra-luxury cruise travel brands like Silversea, Seabourn, Azamara, Phoenix Reisen.
Compagnie Ocaane provides regularly scheduled (the whole year round) ferry departures from Quiberon to Belle-Ile-en-Mer/Belle Island (Le Palais) and Houat Island and Hoedic Island (Lorient ferry terminal). The daily ferries carry passengers as well as bikes and vehicles. The crossing time is 35-50 minutes. In addition, the Navix Company also links to Groix Island. During summer (July and August), Angelus Motorboats provide regularly scheduled daily Morbihan Gulf cruises leaving roundtrip from Port-Haliguen/Quiberon.
Quiberon's current-day economy is heavily based on domestic tourism being a popular seaside resort destination.
In the 19th century, when was developed food sterilization, Quiberon became France's largest fishing port serving the country's sardine fishing and canning industries. Quiberon's tourism industry started to develop in the late-19th-century, following the opening of the Auray-Quiberon railway (1882-inaugurated, 27 km / 17 mi long single-track, standard gauge railroad). In the following years, the town became a favored summer vacation destination for French celebrities (artists and magnates), leading to the year 1924 when the entire Quiberon Peninsula was designated a health resort.
The regularly scheduled seasonal train service (two daily connections/departures) from Quiberon connects (via Auray) with Paris City and from there with other major destinations in France. The service is provided by SNCF and only during summer. For the remainder of the year (September thru July), Quiberon and Auray remain connected via a regularly scheduled bus service. Private aircraft are served at Quiberon Aerodrome (775 m / 2543 ft2-long runway) which is open the whole year round.
The town of Saint-Pierre-Quiberon occupies the Peninsula's northern part and has population around 2,000. The town is popular for its 18th-century Fort Penthievre (at the entrance to the peninsula/its narrowest point).
