The town was founded in 1851 (as Eminence), later renamed after Mount Rainier (Washington) and incorporated in 1881. Until 1993, the town was best-known for the Trojan Nuclear Power Plant (Oregon's only commercial nuclear reactor which used to supply with electricity Portland OR between 1976-1993, when the plant was closed and decommissioned).
Lewis and Clark Bridge (over Columbia River) links Rainier with Longview WA. The 1930-built bridge has length 366 m (1200 ft) and is the only one between Portland and Astoria that spans the river's entire width. Through Rainier runs the 750-km (466-mi) long Portland and Western Railroad with Amtrak passenger train service available in Kelso WA. In 2005, in Rainier was inaugurated Teevin Terminal (serving cargo barges). The terminal is located just across from Port Longview WA.
