Rastatt is a Murg River/Rhine River cruise port and town in Germany's Baden-Wurttemberg state (Urban district) with population around 50,000. The town is located on Murg River, approx 6 km (4 mi) to the north of the Murg-Rhine confluence.
The nearest Rhine cruise port is the spa town Baden-Baden (approx 11 km / 7 mi to the south).
The town started to develop in the 18th century, remaining until 1771 the residence of Markgrafschaft Baden (Margraviate of Baden / 1112-1803) - a territory of the Holy Roman Empire (962-1806). Here were held the Treaty of Rastatt (1714) and Second Congress of Rastatt (1797-99). By the mid-19th-century, the town was heavily fortified and became one of Prussia's strongest fortresses. However, in 1890, all its fortifications were dismantled.
Town's current-day economy is marked by the Mercedes-Benz car factory opened here in 1997. As cruise port, Rastatt is visited via Plittersdorf and included in the regular schedule of the German travel company Phoenix Reisen.
