Recife is a major port city, Brazil's 4th largest (population around 1,6 million / metro over 3,7 million) and also one of the country's most historic port cities, established by the Portuguese in 1537.
The city is named for the long reef parallel to its shoreline and enclosing the harbor. The city features surrounding tropical forests, several small islands, rivers and bridges crisscrossing the city, which is why it's often called "The Venice of Brazil".
One of the country's main business centers, Recife is served by one airport (Guararapes-Gilberto Freyre International Airport) and two seaports (1 in-town, plus Suape - at approx 40 km / 25 mi). Local economy is based on industries like brewing, canning, shipbuilding, auto, electronics, tube manufacturing, chocolates, textiles, tourism.
Near Recife (in Pernambuco) is located the EAS-Atlantico Sul shipyard. The shipyard is in Suape Port and covers an area of approx 1,62 km2. The shipyard has annual capacity to process around 160,000 tons of steel. Yard's drydock has length 400 m, width 73 m and depth / draft 12 m. At the drydock can be refurbished or constructed ships with DWT up to 500,000 tons.
Atlantico Sul shipyard is operated by a consortium with main shareholders Camargo Correa (1939-founded private conglomerate), Queiroz Galvao Group (1953-founded industrial conglomerate), PJMR (acquired by VARD Promar in 2017) and SHI (10%). Shipbuilding's technological expertise is provided by SHI (Samsung Heavy Industries). Yard's ship construction business started in February 2007. The first Samsung shipbuilding project was started in September 2009.
At EAS shipyard, for Promef (subsidiary of Petrobras / Petroleo Brasileiro) were constructed a total of 22 oil tankers, including 14 Suezmax and 8 Aframax. Also here, in January 2019 was drydock refurbished the cruise ship Salamis Filoxenia.
Recife cruise terminal
In Recife, cruise ships dock in port's commercial harbour, from where passengers are transported via shuttle buses to downtown. Unaccompanied walking through the port is forbidden.
The port has no dedicated cruise terminal (only a small building for Customs processing) neither provides any associated with cruises services. The cruise company-arranged shuttle service is to a large shopping mall in downtown Recife.
