Red Wing MN is an upper Mississippi River cruise port and town in Minnesota USA (Goodhue County), with population around 17,000.
The town is home to nationally known manufacturers like Red Wing Shoes, Red Wing Stoneware, Riedell Ice and Roller Skates. Here is also Cannon Valley Trail's eastern terminus. Treasure Island Resort Casino is operated by Prairie Island Indian Reservation (located nearby). Red Wing Bridge (officially Eisenhower Bridge, opened 1960) links Red Wing (Levee Park) with Wisconsin and carries US Route 63.
This city was named after Red Wing (Shakea) - early-19th-century Dakota Sioux chief. During the 1812 war (between British Empire and the USA), he was initially a British ally, but later declared neutrality. In 1889, the federal government established Mdewakanton Sioux Indian Reservation (along Mississippi) to free up land for new settlers, and the current city developed around the reservation (aka Prairie Island Indian Community).
Cruise shore excursion options from Red Wing include bus tours to Wabasha's National Eagle Center and scenic boat cruise on the Mississippi's Lake Pepin (on the Minnesota-Wisconsin border).
