Reggio Calabria is a major seaport and the largest city in Calabria region (Southern Italy), with population over 200,000 (metro over 260,000). Reggio is separated from Sicily Island by Strait of Messina. By passenger shipping traffic, Italy's largest seaports are Messina (Sicily), Naples and Reggio.
Regularly scheduled daily ferries connect Reggio with the Aeolian Islands - Lipari Island (7 weekly crossings, travel time 2 hours), Vulcano Island (7 weekly crossings, time 2,5 hours), Panarea Island (5 weekly crossings, time 3 hours), Salina Island (7 weekly crossings, time 2 hours), Stromboli Island (5 weekly crossings, time 4 hours). All these Aeolian routes are served by the company Liberty Lines Fast Ferries. The route Salerno-Messina connects the Calabria's ports Reggio and Villa San Giovanni.
City's economy is primarily based on agriculture and export (fruits, tobacco, briar, bergamot orange (fragrant citrus fruit used in perfumes). Port's shipping operations are another major contributor, with its well-developed ferry and commercial fishing industries. Tourism is also a lucrative industry, benefitting from city's beautiful beaches. Tourism is distributed in the region between Costa Jonica (Ionian Sea), Costa Viola (Tyrrhenian Sea) and Aspromonte Mountain (Aspromonte National Park).
City's best-known tourist attractions and landmarks include a 6th-century Castle, churches and cathedrals, palaces, theatres, Villa Genoese-Zerbi (14th-century), Palazzo Nesci (19th-century mansion), Pinacoteca Comunale (art gallery), museums - including Museo Nazionale della Magna Grecia (aka Palazzo Piacentini - themed on Magna Graecia's history and artifacts) and Piccolo Museo San Paolo (Byzantine and Russian arts). The city is also famous for its numerous archaeological sites.
Reggio Calabria is linked to Naples via road SS18, to Taranto via road SS106 roads and to Salerno via highway A2. The city is served by Reggio Calabria Airport (aka Tito Minniti) located approx 5 km (3 ml) south of downtown. The airport serves the companies Alitalia and Blue Panorama Airlines (flights to Milano and Rome) and Blue Air (flights to Turin).
