Roscoff is a major ferry port in Brittany (northwestern France). The small town has population around 4,000. The small Ile de Batz island (population around 600) is located nearby and can be reached from the harbor by launch.

The French ferry company BRITTANY FERRIES (headquartered here) operates regularly scheduled crossings between France and England UK (Roscoff-Plymouth and the reverse / daily departures February through November, by the ferries Armorique and Pont Aven) and between France and Ireland (Roscoff-Cork and the reverse / once weekly, Saturday departures March through November, by the ferry Pont Aven). The ferry company IRISH FERRIES operates regularly scheduled services between France to Ireland (Roscoff-Rosslare Europort, May through September).

In 1968, the French government agreed to build a deepwater seaport here. In 1972, as all ferry operators were reluctant to start the relatively long (6 hours) crossing between Plymouth and Roscoff.

Alexis Gourvennec (1936-2007, pig farmer, economic leader) and his colleagues founded Brittany Ferries. In the following years, the seaport was developed as a freight ferry port serving via Ro-Ro ships Breton's export of agricultural produce, and also the car tourism and short breaks holiday travel sectors.
