Saint-Jean-de-Luz is an Atlantic port and town in Pyrenees-Atlantiques department (southwestern France), and part of the Basque province Lapurdi (Labourd). The town covers a total area of approx 19 km2 (7 mi2) and has population around 14,000.
The bay is located to the east of Bay of Biscay (Atlantic Ocean, sheltered between Spain and Arcachon). The harbor is well-protected by sea walls, making it a favorite mooring location for boaters sailing along Basque Coast.
Saint-Jean-de-Luz is also a recently-developed seaside resort destination, featuring large marina (for pleasure craft and yachts), top-quality hotels, safe and clean sandy beaches, thalassotherapy Spa, casino, golf courses, premium cuisine. The town is located south of Biarritz (on Nivelle / Urdazuri River), opposite to Ciboure. The port is on the estuary where the river flows into the Atlantic.
Currently, the town's economy depends heavily on tourism. Many sporting and cultural events are held annually, including internships, classical music concerts, Basque Pelota championships, film festivals.
The town is served by the Biarritz Pays Basque Airport (aka Biarritz-Parme Airport) located just 5 km (3 mi) southeast of Biarritz City. The airport serves regular flights linking to domestic airports (Lyon, Paris) as well as international flights linking to Belgium (Charleroi) and the UK-England (London). Seasonal flights connect to Switzerland (Geneva, Basel), Ireland (Dublin), Corsica Island (Bastia), Germany (Berlin), Luxembourg City.
The town is part of Eurociudad Vasca Bayonne-San Sebastian/Eurocity - a cross-border region (between Spain and France, along the Bay of Biscay's coast) that integrates 42 communities (total population around 650,000) in both countries. These integrated communities share common projects (tourism, freight transportation, infrastructures) based on their common Basque cultural base. The largest cities (with population 10,000+) in this "eurodistrict" are France's Bayonne, Anglet, Biarritz, Hendaye, Saint-Jean-de-Luz, and Spain's Donostia-San Sebastian, Renteria, Hernani, Fuenterrabia, Passages, Andoain, Lasarte-Oria, Zarauz. The Agglomeration Cote Basque-Adour includes the French cities Anglet and Biarritz.
