Sainte Anne Island (Seychelles) is the biggest (sized 2,3 km2 / 1 mi2) in the Marine National Park located off Mahe Island (Indian Ocean). The isle was discovered on Sainte Anne's Day, and was the first land where French settlers lived prior to colonizing Mahe. Island's highest elevation point is 246 m (807 ft) and its total population is under 100.
The island was discovered in 1742 by the French explorer Lazare Picault. Seychelles' first French settlement was founded here in 1770. During the early-20th century, Saint Abbs Whaling Company maintained on the island a whaling station, which ruins still exist today.
In recent history, the island was used by escaped prisoners. Currently, it is home to Sainte Anne Resort and Spa - opened in 2002 on the island's southwest tip. The resort has 87 luxury villas. The village is next to the hotel and houses park rangers, restaurant, dive shop. Some employees travel daily from Victoria (Mahe).
