Sakaiminato is a port city in Japan's Tottori Prefecture, established in 1899 (as an open port for trading with the UK and USA) and as city in 1956. Port Sakaiminato is also the cruise port to Matsue (Shimane Prefecture's capital city, port locode JPMTE) and Yasugi (best known for the Adachi Museum of Art and its open-air gardens).
Sakaiminato is located at Yumigahama Peninsula's northern end, surrounded by Lake Nakaumi (west), Miho Bay (east) and Sakai Channel (north). The city has population around 35,000, covers land area approx 29 km2 (11 mi2). and is served by Port Sakai (locode JPSAK).
Following WW2 (1939-1945), the seaport served as a fishing base for all Western Japan's fishing industry. Product processing is still a major industry here. Here is homeported DBS Cruise Ferry company's cruiseferry Eastern Dream, connecting Japan to Vladivostok (Russia) and Donghae (South Korea).
Yonago Airport is the busiest in Tottori Prefecture. Next to the airport is Miho Airbase. Asiana Airlines (one of South Korea's two largest airlines - together with Korean Air) has sales office in Sakaiminato. The city is linked to Japan's railway network via Sakai Line's branch (between Sakaiminato and Yonago Station on San'in Main Line).
The city is home of Shigeru Mizuki, creator of GeGeGe no Kitaro, the popular character seen in plenty of forms throughout Japan. Kitaro's spirit can be found in Sakaiminato, on the street dedicated to all characters which appear in Mizuki's stories, Kitaro Road. 100 bronze statues of characters line both sides of Kitaro Road.
