Salzburg is a Salzach River (Inn River/Danube) port city in Austria, ranked by population (around 160,000) the country's 4th-largest - after Vienna, Graz and Linz

Salzburg is included in cruisetours not as a river cruise port but as a land tour destination. The city is visited on complimentary/organized by the ship operator bus tours leaving from major Danube port cities like Vienna/Wien and Passau (Germany) but mainly from Linz.

Salzburg is famous worldwide as the birthplace of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (1756-1791). Since 1997, the city is an UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Altstadt (Old Town) is renowned for its best-preserved baroque architecture. Adding new-style buildings to the Altstadt without risking the city's UNESCO status is quite challenging.

Among the city's best-known landmarks and tourist attractions are the Historic Centre, churches (Salzburger Dom cathedral, Franziskanerkirche, University Church), Festung Hohensalzburg (castle, one of Europe's largest), St Peter's Abbey, Nonnberg Abbey (Benedictine monastery), Salzburg Residenz (Prince-Archbishops' residence palace), Mozart's Birthplace and Residence, Getreidegasse (Old Town's shopping street). On bus excursions from Salzburg can be visited Mirabell Palace (gardens), Sebastiansfriedhof (cemetery), Schloss Leopoldskron (palace), Hellbrunn district (castles and parks).
