La Gomera Island is part of the Canaries - an autonomous Spanish territory in the Atlantic Ocean, located off Africa's coast. By land area (approx 370 km2 / 143 mi2), the island is ranked the 2nd smallest (larger than El Hierro) of all the 7 main Canary Islands (Tenerife, Fuerteventura, Gran Canaria, Lanzarote, La Palma, La Gomera, El Hierro). By total population (over 21,000), the island is also ranked 2nd least populous.
Island's main/principal port and largest town is San Sebastian de La Gomera (on the eastern coast) with population around 9,000. La Gomera Island is part of the Santa Cruz de Tenerife province. Port La Gomera serves cruise ships, but mostly ferries linking to Tenerife Island. The main ferry lines to La Gomera are Naviera Armas (with 10+ ships) and Fred Olsen Express (6 super-fast ferries, operating on 5 routes throughout the Canaries). On Quinta Centenario (street) there is a bus station served by lines going throughout the island.
On September 6th, 1492, Christopher Columbus stopped at the La Gomera harbour before heading to India (America). The building in which he stayed is now the Casa del Colon museum. Other popular tourist attractions on the island include Torre del Conde (tower), Casa de los Peraza, Pozo de La Aguada, two churches (Iglesia de La Asuncion, Ermita de San Sebastian), the chapel Ermita de la Virgen de Guadalupe (in Puntallana).
