Savusavu is a port town on Vanua Levu Island, part of Fiji's Cakaudrove province. The town is on the island's southern coast and has population around 3,500. Savusavu can be reached by plane (1 hour travel time) from Nadi (Port Denarau) or by ferry (approx 12-hour travel time) from Suva or Lautoka.
Savusavu is best known among tourists for its hot springs (opposite the Hot Springs Hotel). At low tide, tourists can see their steam coming from smaller outlets along the foreshore. In the late-19th century, for 2 months in the year, these hot springs turned into 12-18-m high geysers.
A major landmark is Copra Shed Marina (moorings for yachts), currently housing Savusavu Yacht Club, company offices (Pacific Sun, Fiji Air, travel agency), gift shop, 2 rental apartments.
The settlement was originally founded as a trading post for trepang, copra and sandalwood, and had a large copra mill. Today's main industry is tourism, including yachting and scuba diving. There are several resorts, including the 5-star Jean Michel Cousteau Resort, Namale Resort, Daku Resort. Birdwatching tours visit the rare silktail - only found on Vanua Levu Island, in a habitat approx 90 min drive from Savusavu. Savarekareka Mission (10 km to the north) has a late-19th century chapel, and is the first Roman Catholic mission on the island (still functioning).
