Shanghai Baoshan is a major cruise port (mainly turnaround port) for roundtrip itineraries from China to Japan and South Korea. Shanghai is also a homeport/departure point for Yangtze River cruises leaving from Wuhan to Chongqing. China river cruisetour deals are inclusive of internal / domestic flights between Beijing-Xian-Chongqing and between Shanghai-Wuhan. Shanghai is China's biggest city, and also the world's largest city by population (~25 million, metro 34+ million).
Port Shanghai serves over 60% of China's cruise shipping industry. Port's cruise terminals serve mainly the large-capacity Asian fleets of Royal Caribbean, Carnival Corporation (via Costa Asia), MSC Cruises (subsidiary of world's 2nd largest container shipping company MSC, Resorts World Cruises/Genting. While operating on World Cruise itineraries, many medium-sized and smaller luxury ships visit Shanghai as call port. Among such companies are Princess, P&O Australia, Crystal, Azamara, Seabourn, Silversea, Celebrity.
In 2014, the port handled a total of 216 ship calls and 1+ million passengers. Port's berth earnings in 2014 were 6 times the projected, ranking Shanghai China's most profitable homeport. In 2015 were handled 284 ship calls and 1,8+ million passengers. In 2017, the cruise port handled 512 ship calls (including 475 roundtrips) at the 2011-inaugurated Shanghai Wusongkou Terminal (a new berth was opened in 2018). The port plans to reach 1000 cruise ship calls annually (up to 6 million passengers) by 2023.
On April 2, 2017, AIDAbella became the first AIDA Cruises ship visiting Shanghai. The ship left the port on April 4 starting a repositioning cruise to Europe.
On May 30, 2017, the countries' largest shipbuilding companies - Fincantieri (Italy) and CSSC (China State Shipbuilding Corporation), signed a letter of intent with the city's Baoshan District for construction of a cruise ship industrial park. The event followed the signed in Beijing (February 2017) deal between both shipbuilders. In that occasion, Fincantieri's CEO signed an agreement with Carnival Corporation and CSSC for building 2 cruise vessels (plus additional 4 / optional). These will be the ever-first large cruise ships built in China.
By the signed in May 2017 deal, the 3 parties were engaged for building a hub dedicated mainly to cruise activities and shipbuilding. Note: Baoshan District is China's largest commercial and cruise port, representing country's most developed cruise industry region.
On December 10, 2017, started trial operations of Yangshan Port ("Deep Water Port") - the biggest automated container terminal in the world.
- The port is located to the south of Donghai Bridge and covers a land area of 2,23 km2 (0,86 mi2), with shoreline length of 2,35 km (1,46 mi).
- Yangshan Port's capacity was increased from 4 million to 6,3 million TEUs (containers).
- The port's automated equipment was China-designed and manufactured (by Shanghai Zhenhua Heavy Industries Company). It is used in loading / unloading containership operations and includes one bridge crane, one AGV (automated guided vehicle) and one rail-mounted gantry crane.
- Port Yangshan's first set of standard (man-operated) machinery includes all 10 bridge cranes, 40 rail-mounted gantry cranes, 50 AGVs. After completion of all the port's construction phases, the automated machinery set will include a total of 26 bridge cranes, 120 rail-mounted gantry cranes, 130 AGVs.
In August 2019, Port Shanghai announced plans to establish a cruise tourism-related demonstration zone (Shanghai CSSC International Cruise Industrial Park) as part of the strategy to make the city cruise industry's largest hub. By this project will be opened retail shopping venues, cruise shipbuilding facilities and office buildings housing Asia-Pacific cruise companies' headquarters.
- The demo park was built in the former iron and steel production area. A 1700-m2 (18300-ft2) sized duty-free shopping mall inside the cruise port opened in November 2019 (during the second CIIE trade fair (China International Import Expo).
- The state signed an LoI (letter of intent) with two shipbuilders - CSSC (China State Shipbuilding Corporation) and Fincantieri (Italy) to develop the new Cruise Park.
In 2019-Q4, CSSC started the construction of the first Chinese-built cruise ship (Adora Magic City) for the new company/joint-venture Adora Cruises/CSSC Carnival Cruise Shipping Ltd.
In the period 2017-2019, the company Shanghai Waigaoqiao Shipbuilding Co Ltd invested ~USD 260 million in shipyard upgrades in order to be able to start the construction of China's largest passenger ships (CSSC Carnival's Adora).
Prior to 2019, Shanghai's international cruise economy demonstrated steady growth, with (international) passenger numbers escalating from 26000 (2006) to 3,78 million (2019/pre-COVID), accounting for 5,6% of the global market. By the end of 2019, the city handled 3000+ cruise ship calls and ~15,3 million tourists, contributing to an overall economy worth 26 billion yuan (US$3,57 billion).
In 2024, the Port had scheduled a total of 189 homport cruise ship calls (turnarounds/roundtrip departures) with estimated 1,4+ million passengers. Major cruise companies that offered homeporting in Shanghai included MSC, RCI-Royal Caribbean International, and the Chinese brands Adora, Blue Dream, and Viking China.
In August 2024 (10-31st) Shanghai inaugurated its first International Cruise Festival featuring a series of product launches and business promo activities centered around the cruise shipping economy. The new festival is part of the city's strategy to enhance its status as a global consumption hub and attract more international cruise companies to establish their headquarters in Shanghai.
Shanghai cruise terminal
The port is located on the Huangpu River at Wusong estuary and ships dock temporarily on their route to Shanghai Port International Cruise Terminal.
Port Shanghai has all 3 cruise terminals - "Wusongkou Cruise International Terminal", "Waigaoqiao International Cruise Terminal" and "Shanghai International Cruise Terminal".
Shanghai Waigaoqiao Port has capacity to handle 5 cruise liners simultaneously. The newest (5th) berth was inaugurated in 2018.
Port Wusongkou has a major role due to its location in adjacent to the Eastern Sea (where Yangtze River meets Huangpu River).
Shanghai Waigaoqiao Port
Shanghai Port Group operates the Third Shanghai cruise port terminal. It is 30 km away from the city downtown, located in the Shanghai’s Pudong New Area, at Waigaoqiao. The distance to Wusongkou International Cruise Terminal is 7 km, direction East.
The old terminal has 2 berths. The first quay can handle vessels with max GT tonnage 100,000. At the second quay can dock up to 200,000 GT ton vessels.

Shanghai Wusongkou International Cruise Terminal
New terminal's design features futuristic buildings covered with glass and steel. This "Winter Garden" like complex features huge indoor spaces (also containing live hanging gardens and glass-bottomed balconies built on a 400 m / 1300 ft long steel herringbone), glass facades (sheltering a pedestrian route along a public park). Terminal's docking area has total length 1,6 km (1 mi) - extended from the original 774 m (2540 ft). Terminal buildings have combined area 55000 m2 (592,000 ft2). Baoshan District now has annual capacity around 6 million cruise ship tourists. Its berthing capacity is 4 ships (up to 150,000 GT tons each) docking simultaneously.
The "Shanghai International Cruise Terminal" project was won by Sparch Architects in 2004. The Terminal's passenger facilities were designed by Frank Repas Architects. It was completed in 2 phases. Approx 800 m (2600 ft) riverfront area was redeveloped as a gateway into the city. The projected passenger traffic through the terminal is over 1,5 million per year (~1000 ship calls annually).
The total construction area is around 0,26 km2 (0,1 mi2). Approx half of this is built underground, which includes the terminal’s cruise passenger facilities. This "underground" design allows most of the area to be redeveloped as a terraced green park along the river.
This design concept was also based on the idea of a crystal wave wrapping over the terminal's buildings. A second skin of steel and glass was implemented to protect the terminal's aboveground (commercial) spaces, aslo forming populated semi-indoor balcony spaces that overlook the river.
Terminal's pods 1, 2 and 4 contain public venues, including cafes, restaurants and bars. The development project resulted in around 80% commercial and 20% public facilities, including entertainment venues and retail shops. The pedestrian street along the terminal has length 400 m (1300 ft) and is lined up with public events spaces, live gardens, a terraced outdoor theatre, Media Garden (Public Winter Garden), Food Court. The Media Garden hosts festival events and features a 40x30 m (130x100 ft) digital screen for media projections.
Office Pavilion's roofs are covered with photovoltaic panels producing enough electricity for all the lighting needed, thus reducing the terminal's energy consumption and maintaining costs.
The new cruise terminal has all 4 berths, of which 2 reserved for Royal Caribbean's largest ships (Quantum-class and Oasis-class vessels), and the remaining 2 are for smaller vessels (up to 150,000 GT tons). The expanded terminal has capacity to handle ~3.6 million cruise tourists per year.
Baoshan District's government launched the port expansion project in June 2015, with total investment nearly CNY 1 billion (USD 150 million). The project was completed in July 2018. The old cruise terminal building ("Oriental Eye”) was scheduled for renovation and conversion into a commercial complex for cruise passengers, housing shopping and dining venues. The new terminal buildings (on both sides of Oriental Eye) are 3-story and offer security checks, ticket counters, customs, quarantine, duty-free shops.
