Silistra is a Danube River cruise port and town in northeastern Bulgaria. The town covers a total area of approx 27 km2 (10 ml2) and has population around 35,000.
Romans built here a fortress in 29 AD, on the site of earlier Thracian settlement, and named it Dorostorum. The town is on the river's southern bank, and is also part of Bulgaria-Romania border (where it stops following Danube). Silistra is one of Bulgaria's most important port cities in the Southern Dobrudzha region.
Silistra is also a major industrial, transportation, educational and cultural center in northeastern Bulgaria. There are numerous historical landmarks, including Late Roman tomb, Ottoman fort, Medieval fortress ruins, art gallery. Silistra Knoll on Livingston Island (South Shetland Islands, Antarctica) is named after the city.
