Silver Islet was established in the mid-19th-century as a small mining town after a rich deposit of pure silver was discovered (1868) on the nearby island. At that time, the island was sized ~540 ft2/50 m2 and was only 8 ft/2,5 m above the water. Two years later (1870), the mine was developed by the Silver Islet Mining Company (owned by Alexander Hamilton Sibley/1817-1878) being purchased from the Montreal Mining Company (initial island owner). To expand the island (over 10 times its original size), the Silver Islet Mining Company constructed wooden breakwaters around it and filled the space with crushed rock.

In the end of 1883, the shipment of coal (used for the pumps holding back the lake waters) didn't arrive. As a result, in 1884, the machinery stopped and the mine shafts were flooded, never to be reopened.

The town of Silver Islet was built on the Sibley Peninsula's shore, near the island. The miners' houses are fully restored and are used as cottages by tourists during the summer. The town's general store is also restored and in its Tea Room are served light meals.
