Skiathos Island (Greece)

Skiathos Island is located in northwest Aegean Sea and part of Northern Sporades islands. Skiathos is Sporades' westernmost island, located east of Pelion Peninsula (mainland Greece) and west of Skopelos Island. The island has total area approx 50 km2 (19 ml2) and population around 6,000.

Regularly scheduled ferry service to Skiathos and the rest of Sporades islands are offered with departures from Agios Konstantinos (Cyprus) and Volos (Thessaly, mainland Greece). Ferries are both high-speed and conventional cargo-passenger ships, operated by the companies HELLENIC SEAWAYS, SeaJets, Anes Lines, Golden Star Ferries, Aegean Flying Dolphins. Skiathos is linked via ferries to Volos, the Greek isles Skopelos, Alonissos, Thessaloniki, Andros, Syros, Tinos, Mykonos, Paros, Naxos, Santorini, Euboea, and Heraklion (Crete).

Island's main paved road runs along the southeastern coastline with a few narrow dirt roads branching off to the interior and northern coast. The small-sized Skiathos Island features heavy forested landscape and over 60 sandy beaches scattered around its 44-km (27-ml) coastline, making it a popular tourist destination in Greece.

Much of the island is thickly forested with Aleppo Pine and Stone Pine. At Koukounaries there is a scenic lagoon with a great beach.
