Skopelos Island (Greece)

Skopelos Island is in western Aegean Sea and part of Northern Sporades islands. Skopelos is is located east of Pelion Peninsula (mainland Greece), east of Skiathos Island and west of Alonissos Island. The island has total area approx 96 km2 (37 ml2) and has population around 5,000. Skopelos belongs to Greece's Thessaly region (administration centre Volos). Island's main communities are Glossa and Neo Klima.

Regularly scheduled ferry service to Skopelos and the rest of Sporades islands is offered with departures from Agios Konstantinos (Cyprus) and Volos (mainland Greece). Ferries are both high-speed and conventional cargo-passenger ships, operated by the companies HELLENIC SEAWAYS, SeaJets, Anes Lines, Golden Star Ferries, Aegean Flying Dolphins. Skopelos is linked via ferries to Volos, the Greek isles Skiathos, Alonissos, Thessaloniki, Andros, Syros, Tinos, Mykonos, Paros, Naxos, Santorini, Euboea, and Heraklion (Crete).

• The island has 2 mountains over 500 m (1640 ft) - Palouki (546 m / 1791 ft, southeast) and Delphi (681 m / 2234 ft, central). Skopelos is slightly bigger than Mykonos (85 km2 /33 ml2) and Santorini (73 km2 /28 ml2).
• Island's' coastline has length 67 km (42 ml), but due to the mountainous terrain, most coastal areas are inaccessible. 
• Fun fact is that Skopelos is matrilineal - wealth is passed on through the female line. By custom, parents of the bride provide the couple with house (and other properties), which remain in bride's name.
