Skyros Island (Greece)

Skyros Island is in Aegean Sea and part of southern Sporades islands (Greece). The island covers a total area of approx 223 km2 (86 ml2) and has population around 3,000. Skyros is Sporades' biggest island and part of Euboea region unit (central Greece).

• Island's northern part is forested, while the south is dominated by mountain Kochila (792 m/ 2598 ft) and is rocky and bare. Main town is also called Skyros (locally Chora). Island's principal port (Linaria) is on the west coast, serving both ferries and cruise ships.
• Skyros has a castle (kastro) dating back from island's occupation (13th-15th centuries) by Republic of Venice (697-1797). Other popular tourist attractions are Byzantine Monastery of St George and numerous beaches,
• Hellenic Air Force has a major base on the island, due to its strategic location in mid-Aegean Sea. Skyros Airport serves domestic flights.
• Skyros Shipping Company operates regularly scheduled ferry service to Skyros. Ferries run twice daily during holiday season, leaving from Kymi (Euboea Island) to Linaria. During winter months, this service is once daily.
