Spanish Wells Bahamas (Russell Island & St George's Cay|Harbour Island)

Spanish Wells is one of The Bahamas' districts (consisting of Russell Island and St George's Cay) and a small town on St George's Cay. The island has length approx 2,9 km (1,8 mi) and width 610 m (2000 ft). St George's Cay/Spanish Wells is located just 500 m (1600 ft) to the west from Eleuthera island (The Bluff Settlement) and has population around 1,500. A bridge links St George's Cay (aka Spanish Wells Harbour Island) with Russell Island (to the southwest). Russell Island has length 5,8 km (3,6 mi) and is now part of the Spanish Wells community. As a tourism travel destination, Spanish Wells is best known for its beaches, tropical breezes, easygoing vacation experience, friendly people.

During the Middle Ages, Spanish Wells was the last stop for the Spanish galleons (before crossing the Atlantic to Europe) where they were provided with fresh water from the island's wells. The first permanent residents were British colonists (from Bermuda) who in 1647 shipwrecked on the Devil's Backbone reef (off Eleuthera).

Spanish Wells' current economy is largely based on commercial fishing (lobster) and tourism. In the 1970s-80s, the island was often used as a transshipment point for cocaine traffic from Colombia to the USA.

As cruise port, Spanish Wells Harbour Island was included for the first time in the 2021 schedule of the Crystal Cruises' ship Crystal Serenity. The ship's summer 2021 program (July 3 through November 7) included a total of 38x voyages with roundtrip departures from both Nassau and North Bimini Island (Bailey Town).
