St Mary's Island (UK) is the most populous and largest of the Isles of Scilly - an archipelago located off Cornwall's southwest coast (mainland England). The island covers a total area of approx 7 km2 (3 mi2), or around 40% of Scilly Islands total land area, and has population around 2,000.

Cruise ships to St Mary's Island dock at/anchor off Hugh Town (St Mary's Harbour/port locode GBHWZ) on the island's western coast.

Royal Coastguard's Lookout Tower (aka Telegraph Tower) was used by Radio Scilly for broadcasting. The 1803-built tower was among three gun towers constructed on St Mary's Island by Major Daniel Lyman (1756-1830). The towers were intended to accommodate up to 10 men and to mount at the top 32-pounder carronade. At this tower, in 1898 Guglielmo Marconi (1874-1937, electrical engineer and inventor) heard wireless signals transmitted from Porthcurno, which is a 30-mi/50-km distance.

Harry's Walls are remains of an unfinished artillery castle located on a hilltop that is to the northeast of Hugh Town. In 1551 it was begun as part of a main phase of fortification on Isles of Scilly to counter threats from the French. The castle was left unfinished as the site was considered to be unsuitable.

A famous Iron Age cliff castle, Giant's Castle is situated on the coastal path between Porth Hellick Bay and the airfield.

Star Castle lies at the center of the fortification system around St Mary's Harbour's west side popular as the Garrison. The castle's walls take the shape of an 8-pointed star. Star Castle was constructed in 1593 by Robert Adams (1540–1595, mapmaker, Surveyor of Royal Works) under the directions of Francis Godolphin, following the 1588 Spanish Armada. In May 1593, fearing another Spanish invasion, Queen Elizabeth I ordered a fort and a pair of sconces to be built as a lookout for intruder vessels. Currently, Star Castle serves as a hotel.

Porthellick Cove has a memorial to mark the site where Admiral Sir Cloudesley Shovell's body (1650-1707) was washed ashore following the Scilly naval disaster in 1707. This was one of the worst maritime disasters in the history of Britain, when 4 ships (Association, Eagle, Firebrand and Romney) with around 2,000 sailors were lost.
