St Simons Island (Georgia) is a CDP (census-designated place) on St Simons Island, located in Glynn County (Georgia USA). The island and the community are interchangeable, known locally as "The Island". St Simons is part of Brunswick metro area (total population around 115,000), while St Simons population is around 13,000. The island has total area approx 46 km2 (18 mi2).
St Simons GA is on the state's southeastern coast, midway between Jacksonville FL and Savannah GA. The island is a residential community and seaside resort. It is the largest of Georgia's "Golden Isles" - also including Jekyll Island, Sea Island, and the privately owned Little St Simons Island. Tourists visit St Simons for its warm climate, beautiful beaches, various outdoor activities, historical sites, restaurants, shops.
In addition to its permanent residents, the island enjoys an influx of both part-time residents and tourists throughout the whole year. Around 27% of the island's total housing units are seasonally, recreationally or occasionally used. The majority of residential and commercial development is on the southern half. Most of the northern half is woodland and marsh. In the northeast, a large portion of land was designated a nature preserve (Cannon's Point Preserve), open daily for visitors and featuring historical ruins, undisturbed maritime forest, trails.
The main mode of travel to St Simons Island is by automobile via FJ Torras Causeway (connecting Brunswick GA to St Simons). Domestic flights to the island are served by Malcolm McKinnon Airport.
