The settlement developed in the 14th-century around the Stolzenau Castle (1346-built, residence of the Counts of Hoya-Nienburg) and was first mentioned in 1370. In 1594, the town was devasted by a great fire in which 85 houses burned down. Originally, Stolzenau was owned by the counts of Grafschaft Hoya (1202-1582, part of Lower Rhine-Westphalian Empire/Holy Roman Empire/962-1806). When the Hoya counts died out, Stolzenau became part of Herzogtum Braunschweig-Luneburg (Duchy/1235-1806).
Stolzenau's best-known tourist attractions include St Jacobi Kirke (17th-century Protestant church), St Vitus Kirke (15th-century church), Kloster Schinna (12th-century monastery), Rathaus (19th-century Town Hall), Judischer Friedhof (18th-century Jewish cemetery), downtown architecture (medieval half-timbered houses), Heimatmuseum Stolzenau (history museum), green spaces and recreational parks, water sports activities, annually held folklore festivals (including Schutzenfest/shooting festival).
The town's current-day economy is based on industries like agriculture, plastics processing, gravel mining. Hornschuch Stolzenau GmbH (Germany's largest artificial leather factory) supplies the German automobile manufacturers VW-Volkswagen and Opel.
