Sulfeld is an Alster River/Elbe River cruise port and town in Germany's Schleswig-Holstein state (Segeberg district) with population around 4,000. Sulfeld is approx 30 km (19 mi) north of Hamburg and approx 13 km (8 mi) south of Bad Segeberg (Kreis district's capital).
Sulfeld was on the Alster-Beste-Kanal (15th-16th-century-built canal between Hamburg and Lubeck/total length 91 km / 57 mi) connecting the rivers Beste and Trave. However, this artificial waterway was used only between 1529-1550, mainly by cargo barges. Alster River has length 56 km (35 mi) and flows through 2 German states (Schleswig-Holstein and Hamburg). Schleuse Sullfeld (South Lock, on Mittellandkanal) was built between 1934-37. The Lock is on 3 levels (6 water basins total) and has length 350 m (1148 ft), width 100 m (328 ft), depth 18 m (59 ft).
Mittellandkanal/Midland Canal was built between 1906-1938. By total length (326 km / 202 mi) this is Germany's longest artificial waterway. Mittellandkanal starts at Horstel (near Rheine/connecting with Dortmund-Ems Canal) and ends near Magdeburg (connecting to Elbe-Havel Canal). The Canal interlinks the following major German cities: Ibbenburen, Osnabruck, Bramsche, Lubbecke, Minden, Garbsen, Hannover, Sehnde, Hildesheim, Peine, Salzgitter, Braunschweig, Wolfsburg, Haldensleben, Magdeburg.
As cruise port, Sulfeld is included in the schedule of one of Europe's largest river cruise companies - CroisiEurope (ships Victor Hugo and Mona Lisa). Next table shows CroisiEurope's 11-day relocation cruisetour itinerary (Amsterdam to Berlin) priced from EUR 1520 (USD 1830) per person with double occupancy.

The village was founded in the late-12th-century. The town's current-day economy is largely based on agriculture. A major contributor is also Forschungszentrum Borstel (FZB/Research Center of the Leibniz Association). The best-known tourist attraction is Herrenhaus Borstel (baroque-style manor house and garden in Borstel / approx 2 km northwest of downtown Sulfeld).
