Suva is a port city and capital of Fiji, ranked the country's largest city, with population around 90,000 (metro over 180,000). Suva is located on Viti Levu Island's southeast coast, it is the biggest city in the South Pacific Islands region. Large portion of its residents are students and immigrants. To the south of Viti Levu is Beqa Island - famous for the firewalking practiced by the Sawau people. Fiji's other large cities are Lautoka (Viti Levu), Nadi (Viti Levu), Labasa (Vanua Levu), Ba (Viti Levu) and Levuka (Ovalau).

In 1877, Suva became Fiji's capital. Colony's administration was moved from Levuka to Suva in 1882. Suva metro area (together with the bordering cities Nasinu, Nausori, Lami) has population around 330,000,

Unlike most cities in Fiji, Suva didn't grow around a single industry but was developed as a hub and the country's commercial center with most banks headquartered here. Most financial institutions, non-government organizations, government departments and ministries are also headquartered here.

A large part of the international shipping of Fiji is conducted at Kings Wharf (Suva). Also there dock international cruise ships, resulting in significant growth in travel tourism industry. The city's largest industrial areas are at Walu Bay (factories, warehouses, import and export shipping companies, containership terminals and yards for shipbuilding and shiprepairs.
