Swansea is a port city in Wales, ranked as the country's 2nd largest (following Cardiff) and the UK's 25th largest. The city is located on Wales's southwestern coast and has population around 245,000.
Port Swansea is managed by ABP South Wales (port authority company, part of ABP ("Associated British Ports"). In October 2017, the company Swansea Drydocks Ltd reopened the port's drydock facilities after an extensive refurbishment. The refurbishment project involved essential infrastructure upgrades, including caisson (watertight retaining structure), lock gates, water pumps, electrical systems, engineering workshops.
Swansea port is long-known for its shiprepair services dating back to early 20th century. In 2017, ABP South Wales signed a long-term lease contract with ABP to utilize the port’s drydock facilities for serving vessels with DWT (deadweight tonnage) up to 35,000 tons.
Swansea Marina (located to the south of downtown) has capacity 410 berths (for yachts and leisure boats). An additional 200-berth marina is located near the mouth of Tawe River. More leisure boat berths were constructed at Prince of Wales Dock (Swansea Docks). Swansea Docks are owned and operated by ABP and have capacity to handle various bulk cargo ships. The Docks consist of 3 floating docks and 1 ferry terminal. The ferry terminal was operated by Fastnet Line, until 2011 providing Ro-Ro vessel service.
